“Mom, my throat hurts.” How many times do we hear this in a year?  Especially right now, in this weird transition between winter and spring.  It’s the time of year when germs just seem to run amok, and then to pour lemon juice on a papercut, pollen comes swooping in! Coughs, sore throats, fevers and headaches, noses that run like a faucet in all the yuckiest colors of the rainbow – we see it all here at High Hopes, especially in the winter and spring.  But there’s one kind of sore throat that is unarguably the worst of them all: strep throat. If you ever need to learn how to make a mess in the quickest, most thorough way possible, we know of several High Hopes classrooms that house the experts on the subject. Bet you know some too – they’re called toddlers, and when it comes to making messes, they are pros. If you’re the parent or caretaker of a professional mess-maker, it can get really overwhelming really fast. The frustration is hard to tamp down when it seems like they’re doing it on purpose, like the mess is never-ending and spontaneously multiplies, like you’ll never experience that mythical feeling of “clean” again. But there is a method to the mess-making madness. Maybe if we can understand a little more of the why behind the mess, it won’t be so exasperating.

Viruses happen. We are so aware of it here at High Hopes Inclusive Preschool. There are many wonderful benefits to bringing your child to an environment that they share with their peers all day, every day! But we know that one of the drawbacks is how easily contagious bugs can spread around. Hey, these kiddos are still building their immune systems, right? So we thought it might be a good idea to share some of the signs, symptoms, common misconceptions, and prevention tips for a few of the most common illnesses that can spread in schools. One of the grossest is hand-foot-and-mouth disease.
