In [Part 1] of this post, we took you on the first half of a journey shadowing speech therapy sessions, trying to get an idea of what a Day in Speech therapy might look like.  We summarized two sessions, one focused primarily on language and concept goals, another on functional use of an AAC device to communicate.

The rest of the day continued to surprise us, addressing even more speech pathology issues and providing an even deeper view of all that speech therapy can accomplish.  See what the rest of the day held in store below...

10:30 AM – Brandy Storck

When we arrived to observe Brandy’s session at 10:30, we were not the only ones there to observe.  The patient’s mother and home health nurse sat in on the session as well.  Brandy described how beneficial that can be, allowing her...

The month of May is Better Hearing & Speech month, and here at High Hopes we are always happy to celebrate our speech therapy program! Every week our clinic’s staff of just 9 therapists serves upwards of 196 patients in 231 speech therapy sessions. Each client is unique and comes with their own individualized needs and goals.  The complexities of speech and language are reflected in the many faces a speech therapy session can take on, and in the interest of spreading awareness about better hearing and speech, we want to take you on a journey through some of those complexities.  So we shadowed a few speech therapists and picked their brains to get an idea of what a Day in Speech Therapy might look like...

This past weekend was a sunny, hot reminder that summer is well on its way in Middle Tennessee!  With summer comes a vacation from school for many kids, and that means more free time for them to find ever more creative ways to alleviate their boredom. Of course, the outdoors are every parent's best friend during these burning summer months (with proper sunscreen application, naturally), but what about those rainy days?  What about the days that are too hot for even the toughest of kids to enjoy playing outside?  What about the days when EVEN OUTSIDE isn't enough to entertain those growing, inquisitive minds? Have no fear!  We have a few ideas...

Since its founding in 1931, the Nashville Children’s Theatre has been a staple of Nashville fine arts and education.  In addition to performing and entertaining throughout each year, they host and run programs to nurture and educate their target audience: children and young adults throughout Middle Tennessee! Today, the Nashville Children’s Theatre remains an active and conscientious member of the Nashville and Middle Tennessee community. Knowing the history and the inclusive, educational values of this organization, we thought it’d be fun to go check out one of their performances… with a member of their target audience! So we took Aldyn to their latest production...

On April 29th, Music City’s own minor league baseball team the Nashville Sounds will face the New Orleans Baby Cakes in their 12th home game of the season, and High Hopes will be the Charity of the Game! Learn more about the Sounds and this opportunity to show your support for High Hopes in this post...

Coordinated by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the Week of the Young Child is a nation-wide celebration of early childhood education.  This annual celebration draws attention to the importance of early childhood education and increases awareness of what that entails, while at the same time encouraging a whole lot of good, all-around family fun. This year’s Week of the Young Child is next week: April 15-21, 2018! Here are some ways we will be celebrating the Week of the Young Child next week at High Hopes!

Sporting the largest community-built playground in the United States, the Crofts’ Historic Home available for seasonal tours, and several dynamic and interactive exhibits with a diverse population of animals, the Zoo continues to up the ante of its offerings.  Newer exhibits such as spider monkeys, the interactive Kangaroo Kickabout, and cassowary enclosures continue to be popular among Zoo-goers of all ages. Most recently, on March 15th, the Zoo cut the ribbon on a large addition featuring Andean bears. In the month of April, the Zoo will be offering several unique opportunities for family springtime fun, and that’s what we will highlight in this post.  Consider making plans to attend one or more of these awesome community events at the Nashville Zoo!

Happy Easter from High Hopes!

Spring is in the air and we are so excited to see what this new season has in store for us!

Thanks to all the families who contributed Easter eggs for us to fill with goodies.  Thanks to your donations, we had plenty of eggs to go around and we filled them all with love (and chocolate)!

Thanks to all the volunteers who hid the eggs and helped with the hunts.  We couldn't have pulled it off without you, nor would we have wanted to!  Our volunteers are such a huge part of what we do, not just for special events like our Easter egg hunts, but also throughout the year.  Thank you to everyone who volunteers their time and their smiles to our events, our classrooms, our clinic, our clubs and camps, and so much more!  We love you and we can't thank you enough!

It’s St. Patty’s Day again, folks, and we had an excellent time celebrating at High Hopes yesterday! In honor of the saint whose famous legend tells how he drove all the snakes out of Ireland, we all wore our favorite green outfits.  And we tickled all who failed to do so! Now, as everyone knows, when you catch a leprechaun, he will grant you three wishes in exchange for his freedom. We thought it might be fun to sit down with a few of our friends and talk about what they would wish for if they ever captured a leprechaun!  Read about their answers...
