This past weekend was a sunny, hot reminder that summer is well on its way in Middle Tennessee!  With summer comes a vacation from school for many kids, and that means more free time for them to find ever more creative ways to alleviate their boredom. Of course, the outdoors are every parent's best friend during these burning summer months (with proper sunscreen application, naturally), but what about those rainy days?  What about the days that are too hot for even the toughest of kids to enjoy playing outside?  What about the days when EVEN OUTSIDE isn't enough to entertain those growing, inquisitive minds? Have no fear!  We have a few ideas...

When it comes to motor milestones, crawling is one major milestone that can be overlooked. It's like the sequel in an epic trilogy, often just seen as a setup for the finale (in this case, walking). If you don't look too closely, crawling seems like just the awkward in-between phase, where they're not really infants anymore, but they aren't quite toddlers yet either. Well, we're here to tell you that crawling is much more than just a filler episode in your child's development. So why is it so important? Read on...

Sporting the largest community-built playground in the United States, the Crofts’ Historic Home available for seasonal tours, and several dynamic and interactive exhibits with a diverse population of animals, the Zoo continues to up the ante of its offerings.  Newer exhibits such as spider monkeys, the interactive Kangaroo Kickabout, and cassowary enclosures continue to be popular among Zoo-goers of all ages. Most recently, on March 15th, the Zoo cut the ribbon on a large addition featuring Andean bears. In the month of April, the Zoo will be offering several unique opportunities for family springtime fun, and that’s what we will highlight in this post.  Consider making plans to attend one or more of these awesome community events at the Nashville Zoo!

Happy Easter from High Hopes!

Spring is in the air and we are so excited to see what this new season has in store for us!

Thanks to all the families who contributed Easter eggs for us to fill with goodies.  Thanks to your donations, we had plenty of eggs to go around and we filled them all with love (and chocolate)!

Thanks to all the volunteers who hid the eggs and helped with the hunts.  We couldn't have pulled it off without you, nor would we have wanted to!  Our volunteers are such a huge part of what we do, not just for special events like our Easter egg hunts, but also throughout the year.  Thank you to everyone who volunteers their time and their smiles to our events, our classrooms, our clinic, our clubs and camps, and so much more!  We love you and we can't thank you enough!

Whether they are taking a trip to outer space on a “rocket ship” that’s really a playground swing, splashing around wildly in a water puddle, or quietly building a zoo out of colorful blocks, children are always spending the majority of their time and energy doing one simple thing: playing. But how simple is it, really?  All the activities that we remember most as adults are representative of just a few of the stages of play a child will experience. In this blog post, we’re going to take a look at the six social stages of play.  If we know what to look for, we can spot these stages as they come, and we can engage in a child’s play in a way that is supportive and productive no matter their age or developmental level! Let’s play!
