High Hopes Development Center is a 35-year-old non-profit organization that loves, nurtures, and educates children helping each child reach their maximum potential. The mission of High Hopes Development Center is to equip children, youth, and their families with the skills necessary to achieve success through education, therapeutic services, and loving support. Description:

The Occupational Therapist supports the High Hopes Development Center’s goals, values and philosophy by exhibiting the following behaviors: excellence, quality service, commitment and accountability. As a member of the High Hopes Development Center’s team, performance includes demonstration of the following accountabilities: communication, teamwork, job knowledge and leadership.

Under the direction of the Director of Clinical Services, the Occupational Therapist performs comprehensive evaluations of clients and communicates results and recommendations to parents/family. The Occupational Therapist administers therapy in individual settings and communicates progress and goals with parents/family and also serves as a consultant to teachers in regard to the specific needs of the children.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

Evaluations

  • Administers comprehensive Occupational Therapy evaluations

  • Writes comprehensive reports summarizing the details of the evaluation

  • Communicates results of the evaluation to parents and members of the multidisciplinary team

  • Provides Occupational Therapy/gross motor screenings and communicates results and recommendations to parents

Therapy 

  • Communicates progress and recommends home/classroom activities with parents and members of the multidisciplinary team

  • Reassesses, updates, and discusses goals with family input

  • Consults and works with SLPs and PTs as needed

  • Contributes to the cleanliness, safety, and organization of the therapy clinic and office space

Documentation 

  • Documents evaluations, progress reports, and treatment notes accurately and according to clinic requirements

Meetings

  • Attends by-yearly IPP meetings and provide progress summaries for parents and members of the multidisciplinary team

  • Attends training meetings/sessions as required to maintain licensure

  • Attends mandatory staff meetings

Classrooms

  • Serves as consultant to classroom teachers regarding specific needs of the children

  • Serves as resource regarding positioning and facilitating gross motor development

Physical Requirements  

  • Transitions on and off floor mats during treatment sessions

  • Transfers infants 10-20 pounds from the floor mat to carry distances of 30-50 feet

  • Maintains floor sitting postures for 45-60 minute therapy sessions

  • Transfers patients ranging in size from 50-150 pounds between surfaces and between sitting and  standing positions.

  • Lifts up to 50 pounds for carrying short distances

  • Able to move quickly to prevent patients with cognitive delays or limited safety awareness from self- injury and falls. This may include rising quickly from the floor and making other sudden movements.

Miscellaneous   

  • Works as a team with therapists, teachers, and administration to ensure smooth and safe operation of High Hopes

  • Communicates with families and others in a positive and consistent manner

  • Serves as an ambassador for High Hopes to families, other professionals, and the community

  • Maintains current CPR certification and first aid training

  • Actively participates in 1 fund raising event at High Hopes

  • Supervises OT students

  • Able to react to change productively and handle all other duties/essential tasks as assigned

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

B.S. (or equivalent) in Occupational Therapy; current License in the state of TN; experience with infants and young children with special needs.

 

Other Skills

Strong interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals; problem-solving skills; good judgment; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; computer literate with working knowledge of Word and Excel; highly developed organizational, planning, oral, and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with others.
