Week of the Young Child

Coordinated by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the Week of the Young Child is a nation-wide celebration of early childhood education. This annual celebration draws attention to the importance of early childhood education and increases awareness of what that entails, while at the same time encouraging a whole lot of good, all-around family fun.

This year’s Week of the Young Child is next week: April 15-21, 2018!

The NAEYC is the world’s largest early childhood education association, comprising about 60,000 members and a network of 50 local, state, and regional affiliates to advance their mission. Among those affiliates is a chapter for the Nashville Area (NAAEYC).

The NAEYC’s statement of purpose for the Week of the Young Child is this:

The Week of the Young Child was first established in 1971, which means we are nearing the fifty-year mark for this fun and important focus week. Every year, the NAEYC provides the dates and themes for the Week of the Young Child, so that coordinating events and celebrations can be planned and implemented by the creative leaders and educators of local and regional communities.

In addition to the events and celebrations we’ll be hosting here at High Hopes, be sure to check out the events and activities at the Nashville Zoo to kick it all off!

Here are some ways we will be celebrating the Week of the Young Child next week at High Hopes!

Music Monday

On Music Monday, our music teacher Miss Kathleen will be taking all the preschool students on a musical journey that she has specially planned! For our preschool kiddos, every Monday is Music Monday with Miss Kathleen, but she has promised to make it an extra special day for Week of the Young Child.

Monday is also the day when staff and students all wear purple. We show up en masse wearing purple on this special Monday every year, to show that together we support Early Childhood Education for all young children.

Taco Tuesday

In keeping with the Tasty Tuesday theme, we like to throw a little fun food fiesta of our own! Tacos, like pizza, represent multiple food groups in one food item, so it’s a good way for us to begin the conversation about healthy eating and balanced nutrition with our students.

Plus, tacos! The kids really love building their tacos, and they love eating them even more!

Wacky Tacky Wednesday

Wednesday is the day to throw fashion to the wind! Just put together all the fun and funny things your child has ever wanted to wear, in one outfit! Mismatched hairstyles, silly socks, and tacky clothing are all welcome and encouraged on Wacky Wednesday.

The adults like to get in on this one, too, so don’t be surprised if you see a lot of tacky teachers on Wednesday. After all, there’s nothing better than making a preschooler belly laugh because your hair is sticking up like crazy or you wore two different shoes!

Thrilling Thursday

What thrills your child? Whether it’s Predators hockey, superheroes from any universe, fairy tale princesses, or dinosaurs, we want to see them dressed in whatever tickles their fancy!

Do they love space? They can come in their favorite planets tee shirt, or even wear an astronaut’s jumpsuit! Are they Spider-Man’s biggest fan? Web it up for Thursday! The only limits of their costume options on this day are their imaginations.

Family Fun Friday

Family Fun Friday will close our Week of the Young Child, and we’ll be sending it off with a bang! The much-anticipated Touch-a-Truck event occurring in the parking lot at the back of our High Hopes Court traffic circle will be our grand finale for this fun-filled week!

Be sure to join us from 5-7 PM on that Friday, April 20th, for a super-fun summer kick-off! There will be lots to do, including a party train, food trucks galore, live music, a photo contest, and REAL TRUCKS of all shapes and sizes that we can see and touch! RSVP with Bonnie St. Martin by sending an email here: bmartin@highhopesforkids.org.

We can’t wait to celebrate these marvelous children with you! See you next week!
